Notes- 05

Kirby Ferguson- "Everything is a remix."
   - Nothing is original- everything is derived from something else
   - Cnnection with the audience- Easily built using pre-established works/ideas
   - Intent shapes work- Originality comes from the approach, not the result

Malcolm Gladwell- Tipping Point (book)
   - Law of the Few
      - 80% of the work will be done by 20% of the participants
      - Connectors- People who link different people together, across a range of specialties.
      - Mavens- Information specialists, gather knowledge and share it at their discretion.
      - Salesmen- Negotiators, good at closing deals and persuading others.
   - Stickiness Factor
      - How the impact of a message makes the content memorable
      - Especially used in advertising gimmicks/jingles- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnzFRV1LwIo
   - Power of Context
      - "Human behaviour is sensitive and strongly influenced by its environment."
         - e.g. combating minor crimes in an area led to a decrease in violent crime

- a lot of work is about "standing on the shoulders of giants."
   - building on previous successes, yours or others
   - using established techniques

- a lot of successes outright plagiarise
   - be creative about it
      - too similar and you can be in lots of trouble
   - don't keep the same name
      - copyright issues, lots of suing may occur

- "Sorry about the colonialism."- See here

-  Legal Remixing- plagiarising works, whilst staying within the bounds of the law

- Nostalgia- positive feeling, rose-tinted lenses, helpful for prequel/sequel connections

- Continuity- used to build up a relationship with the audience
   - e.g. The Marvel Cinematic Timeline "The Thor-y of Everything"

- 74/100 of the top film successes are sequels or adaptations

- Genre -> Sub-genre
   - standard elements are kept throughout with some variation
      - appropriation, transformation, suberted

- Monomyth- tropes for story events/styles etc

- "Creation requires influence."
- "Copy, transform and combine."

- Movements- often the same inspiration, either different reactions or reacting to others work.

- LUCA- Last Universal Common Ancestor
   - Evolution in action
   - The same way culture movements evolve

- When it comes to plagiarism "people are territorial."
   - be clever about it
   - "Don't be a dick."

                                          - as advised by my favourite geneticist.
